Metaphors

met·a·phor
ˈmetəˌfôr,-fər/
noun

noun: metaphor; plural noun: metaphors
1.
a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable.

This week we have been encircled by metaphors, ways to describe the congregations from which we come, as part of our Vowed Life class. We described our communities as:

A TRAFFIC LIGHT

A PRIDE OF LIONESSES

A GARDEN

A THANKSGIVING DINNER

A WATERSHED

Do any of these resonate with you? What metaphor would you use to describe your call and vocation?

Peace,
Anne

  1. Gemma says what comes to her mind as a metaphor for our congregation is
    A galaxy of stars.

Having significant age. Much expansiveness. Shedding stardust and spawning new stars.

I think that our congregation of Dominican sisters of Peace is like a vegetable garden. We have many wonderful and beautiful 'plants' all about producing something tasty and nutritious for life bringing growth to the mission of God.

What a wonderful question. Thanks for including all of us! JoAnn

  2. A caravan. We are on a sacred journey together. We stop occasionally to refresh ourselves. We sit by the fire and tell stories. We are committed to each other and the journey.

I love the metaphor of garden for my congregation, the Dominican Sisters of Peace. We are a rich variety of color and beauty. As long as we keep weeding and nourishing the garden so we can grow, we can be about the mission of preaching the Good News.

  5. I love the metaphor of the traffic light! We as Dominican Sisters of Peace STOP, (RED), often to consider, reconsider, evaluate and plan. Many times we move with the YELLOW light - slowly with caution not sure of where we are going while at other times we move ahead with great speed with the GREEN light quite sure of our mission of peace and the areas of ministry we need to be about! Thank you for your wonderful reflection Anne! Well done! Holding all of you in prayer!

    1. Like a puppy dog. We are being trained, spoiled, loved tightly with prayer and friendship.

  8. I like the pride of lionesses image. It reminds me the moment that I let go of earthly bright future behind as blue sky in order to move forward for vocation call without looking back. Then joining the group with different ages (usually has one person entering each year), I felt that I was the center of all attentions but at the same time felt like I was just a young tinny lion without knowing much what to do, just dancing around the group. And yet, the wisdom and faith of the groups continue to be the "shield" for this tinny lion, to be companions to lead this lion into the new future adventure together as a community. More than that, the space they gave to this lion has helped the young lion to grow and develop. So is my vocation call+ vision. Wonderful image to reflect on the vocational call and those to journey with us. Thanks Anne.

  9. I think I would describe my life as Thanksgiving!! Not like Polyanna - but with much gratitude for my life - my call to Dominican Life - my family, friends and Community! even the struggles and challenges - it has helped me more compassionate and hopefully loving. Thanks Margie
